The Fox Finds a Home
Ever wonder how contemporary art looks when it gets home? Following up on my earlier post in which Stephen commissioned a Shawn Smith fox sculpture for my mom, the finished piece has finally arrived and found it's home in a sumptuous Delray condo. The original fox sculpture was called "Skulk" and sold at Aqua Art Fair's opening night to a hot shot collector. This piece is very similar, a balsam wood sculpture made up of hundreds of little blocks that give a pixalated look when close and a fluffier look from a distance. It also shows movement and different character depending on the light. Pure genius. It's a bit of contemporary art in Marcia and Steve's more traditional place and it looks fabulous!

The Best of Art Wynwood
Art-goers are just big kids that have to be told not to touch the cake! |
Art Wynwood felt an awful lot like Art Miami. Which makes sense because it's put on by the same group, in the the same location under the same tent with a lot of the same exhibitors featuring some of the same artists. But this is a good thing as Art Miami is one of my early December favorites. This one was a lot of fun as it showed more of some of my favorites from Art Miami, and a lot of artists embracing shiny surfaces and LED technology, which I can never resist. I'm like a moth to a flame. Check it out for yourself in Midtown, Art Wynwood runs now through Monday.

This may have been my favorite piece. There are little tiny etchings on top o the painted stainless. It is amazing!

The Fox (by artist Shawn Smith) is Out of the Bag
Ok, so I can finally spill the beans. My mom (and I) totally became obsessed with San Francisco-based artist Shawn Smith after seeing "Skulk", his Balsa Wood Fox sculpture at Cain Schulte's booth at Aqua Art Fair during Basel. Of course, this being one of the centerpieces of the fair, it was sold at the opening (vernisage in Baselspeak.) But after listening to my mom carrying on about the fox for a couple of days, my crafty second daddy (read: Stepfather) decided to commission one as a very awesome Christmas gift. Of course, it isn't ready yet - but a thrice wrapped photo of the sculpture produced the desired response and we're all excited for it's arrival. Stay tuned.
